Psalm 127:3-4 (NASB)

3  Behold, children are a gift of the Lord,

The fruit of the womb is a reward.

4  Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,

So are the children of one’s youth.

Reflect:

When we learn a newlywed got pregnant, do we not rejoice with them? When a baby is born, do we not celebrate? Do we not say the baby is a blessing and a gift from above?

In Psalm 127, the psalmist recognizes that children are a gift and a reward from the Lord to those He called to bore and raise them. They are like arrows in the hand of a warrior. They are weapons made to be released and shot.

As arrows are made by carefully shaping and forming each part, children must be carefully shaped and formed. As each part of an arrow is made from a specific material for a specific role, every child is made by God for a specific purpose. One example of this is when God consecrated Jeremiah to be a prophet before he was born. (Jeremiah 1:5)

Before releasing an arrow to its target, the arrowhead must be sharpened first. God commands us to hone the character of the young generation by teaching them the truth and training them in the way they should go. (Proverbs 22:6)

Children are blessings because they are God’s arrows meant to be shot into the world to bring change according to the Word of Truth.

Respond:

How do you nurture children God has entrusted to you? Do you teach them the Word of God? How do you hone their skills? Do you treat them like arrows created for a purpose? How do you release them to their call? Do you hold them with skill and strength in a bow that would take them to flight?

Let us pray for the children always.

And if you are a child, remember you are the future of this nation by the grace and purpose God has given you.

Growing up in Sunday School is the reason why Krisha decided to become a teacher. She has been teaching in Sunday School since she was 12 and six years ago, God allowed her to teach in a Christian school in Taguig. Her heart goes out for the young generation, that their ways will be made pure by the Word of God (Psalm 119:9), just as God has preserved her through His Word.
